Rule of Law Trampled!” – Sowore Fumes as Police, Customs, Immigration Bosses Stay Beyond Service Limit
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the continued stay in office of three top security officials whom he says have exceeded the mandatory 35-year service limit, in violation of civil service regulations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, Sowore described their prolonged tenures as a “slap on national integrity” and a blatant disregard for institutional norms and legal provisions.
“These officers in the @PoliceNG, @CustomsNG, and @nigimmigration have surpassed the 35-year service threshold and should have retired. But because of ethnic favouritism, they remain in office,” he alleged.
While Sowore pointed to ethnic bias, his primary concern centred on the flagrant breach of extant rules requiring public servants to retire either after 35 years of service or upon reaching the age of 60 — whichever comes first.
He identified the affected officials as Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service Kemi Nandap, and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
“Their continued occupation of office violates established service rules and undermines public trust. This is not governance — it’s ethnic capture,” Sowore declared, urging the Federal Government to revoke the tenure extensions and restore rule-based leadership.
He warned that failure to uphold such statutory limits erodes the credibility of the civil service and sets a perilous precedent for executive lawlessness.
“Justice and institutional order are non-negotiable. You can’t build a credible democracy on selective rule enforcement. Once you clock 35 years in service, you step down. No exceptions,” he maintained.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the respective security agencies had yet to respond to the concerns raised.
