The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Senator Neda Imasuen, announced on Saturday that he had initiated peace efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing land dispute between the Nigerian Army and the Oghede Community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Imasuen said he visited the community on Friday to conduct an on-the-spot assessment following demolitions reportedly carried out by the Army on properties they claimed were illegally erected on military land.

The senator was led on the fact-finding mission by Brigadier General Ebenezer Olufemi Oduyebo, Commander of the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Also on the visit were Hon. Andrew Uzamere, member representing Ovia North East Constituency II in the Edo State House of Assembly; Major General Charles Omoregie (rtd.), former Commander of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta; and Hon. Orobosa Omo-Ojo, a former Commissioner for Transport in the state.

Addressing the Enogie of Oghede Community, HRH Osazebare Aghahowa, during a courtesy visit to his palace, Senator Imasuen assured that a peaceful and lasting solution would be reached through dialogue and stakeholder engagement. He also appealed to the monarch to advise residents whose homes fall within the Army’s shooting range to vacate for their safety.

“We are seeking a peaceful resolution to this land dispute so that both the Army and the community can coexist harmoniously,” Imasuen said. “The Army has been cooperative and transparent. I’ll also be meeting with the governor to find lasting solutions. They’ve agreed to halt further demolitions, especially of already occupied buildings. However, safety remains non-negotiable for properties inside the active firing zone. According to available records, the land was allocated to the military as far back as 1966.”

In his remarks, Brigadier General Oduyebo expressed regret over the Army’s failed attempts to stop encroachment through dialogue, which he said necessitated the demolition of several unoccupied, newly constructed buildings. He commended Senator Imasuen’s intervention and pledged the Army’s cooperation in ongoing negotiations, noting that further demolitions had been suspended to foster peace.

In his response, the Enogie of Oghede expressed support for the senator’s peace initiative and affirmed his community’s willingness to participate in the reconciliation process.
