Tragedy in Gombe: Flood Sweeps Away Four Residents in Midnight Horror
At least four individuals have died in separate drowning incidents across various parts of Gombe State in recent days, prompting the State Police Command to issue a strong public safety alert, urging heightened caution around water bodies during the rainy season.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The police confirmed that the fatalities occurred across three local government areas and involved mostly children and youths who were swept away in rivers, erosion gullies, and open drainage channels following heavy downpours.
Speaking to Arewa PUNCH on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, described the incidents as both tragic and avoidable.
“These unfortunate cases underscore the urgent need for increased awareness and preventive measures,” Abdullahi stated. “We are appealing to parents, guardians, school authorities, and community leaders to be vigilant and take active steps to protect vulnerable individuals, especially children, from unsafe water environments.”
According to him, the four incidents were reported in Hayin Kwarin-Misau (Akko LGA), Bojude (Kwami LGA), Bajoga (Funakaye LGA), and Difa (Yamaltu Deba LGA), all involving individuals—mainly minors—who drowned in rivers, erosion sites, and unguarded water channels.
The police further advised residents to steer clear of unregulated or open water sources, particularly during the rainy season when water currents become stronger and more unpredictable.
“Children should never be allowed to play outside during rainfall or near rivers and erosion-prone areas. Communities must also take ownership by placing warning signs and installing barriers around known danger zones,” Abdullahi warned.
He also urged the public to avoid walking, driving, or attempting to wade through flooded areas, emphasizing that floodwaters can be deceptively deep and swift.
“Any hazardous erosion sites or uncovered drainage systems should be reported immediately to the relevant local authorities for urgent intervention,” he added.
Reiterating the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, Abdullahi called for community cooperation to help prevent further tragedies during the wet season.
“The death of even one person is too many. It’s a collective responsibility to ensure safety for all,” he said.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
