Some pressure groups from Nigeria’s North East region have renewed their calls for the creation of four additional states—Savannah State (from Borno), Amana State (from Adamawa), Katagum State (from Bauchi), and Muri State (from Taraba).

The demands were presented on Friday at the opening of a two-day zonal public hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, held in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Speaking on behalf of the Amana State Movement, the group’s Director of Media and Publicity, Ahmad Sajor, said the agitation to carve out Amana State from Adamawa and the Uba Chiefdom in Borno was driven by the need to correct a long-standing historical injustice allegedly inflicted on the region by the Nigerian state.

“There was a breach of trust by the Nigerian nation,” Sajor stated, citing a 1961 United Nations plebiscite in which the area voted to join Nigeria. “At the time, the region was received by the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and other government representatives, who assured the people that the area would be treated as a distinct entity—either as a province or state—with Mubi as its capital, equal in status to cities like Kano, Katsina, and Ilorin.”

Sajor lamented that the Nigerian government failed to honour this pledge, and described the push for Amana State as an effort to “correct the betrayal of that commitment.”

Other pro-statehood advocates were visibly present at the hearing, brandishing placards and wearing shirts emblazoned with slogans demanding the National Assembly approve their proposals.

One campaigner, who requested anonymity, said: “Our demands are not excessive. We want Katagum State, and we trust the current assembly to consider our request fairly and grant our wish.”

The event drew significant attention and attendance, including high-profile political and traditional leaders such as the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Usman Kadafur, who represented Governor Babagana Zulum; former Senate President Ahmad Lawan; Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi; and the Shehu of Borno, among others.

The hearing is part of a nationwide constitutional review process being conducted simultaneously across six zones, including Enugu, Kano, Jos, Lagos, Ikot-Ekpene, and Maiduguri.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
