The Nigerian Army has commissioned a solar-powered water borehole with a 30,000-litre capacity for the Basawa Community in Sabon-Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, Maj.-Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, inaugurated the project in Zaria on Friday. He stated that the initiative was aimed at enhancing the quality of life in the community.
Oluyede explained that the donation was part of efforts to strengthen the civil-military relationship and formed a key component of activities marking this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration.
He noted that the project underscored the Army’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate by implementing critical non-kinetic operations that benefit host communities across the country.
“The choice of Basawa Community for this project is deliberate. The Nigerian Army deeply values the continued support of its peace-loving residents,” he said.
The Army Chief added that the water project would help tackle the community’s urgent need for access to clean water—an essential resource for public health, survival, and local economic growth.
He urged residents to take full ownership of the project and ensure its sustainability through proper care and regular maintenance.
Reaffirming his commitment to providing the leadership and resources necessary for Army personnel to effectively serve, Oluyede expressed optimism about the long-term impact of such community-driven projects.
In his remarks, the District Head of Basawa, Alhaji Haruna Bamalli, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army, assuring that the community would take good care of the facility.
He also revealed that professionals within the community would be assigned to a maintenance team to ensure the borehole’s longevity and functionality.
