Sunday Igboho Walks Free as Court Dismisses Gani Adams’ Explosive Accusations

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan on Thursday dismissed a N5 billion defamation suit filed by the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, against Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami, who presided over the matter, also ordered Adams to pay N500,000 in costs to Igboho.

The suit, marked M/1006/2004, was brought by Adams through his lawyer, Sikiru Akinrele, seeking to enforce his fundamental rights. Adams accused Igboho of secretly recording a private phone conversation involving him without consent, and subsequently publishing it in a manner he claimed was defamatory and injurious to his reputation as Aareonakakanfo.

He argued that the act constituted a violation of his right to privacy under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution, and requested the court to declare such recordings and publications illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional. He sought N5 billion in damages.

However, when the case was heard on April 30, 2025, Igboho’s lawyer, Junaid Sanusi, opposed the application. He submitted a counter-affidavit and written address, both of which were adopted during proceedings. Sanusi argued that Adams did not personally swear to the affidavit in support of his claims, and that if a third party does so, it must be explained why the applicant could not.

Justice Ademola-Salami, delivering judgment on July 3, 2025, agreed with Igboho’s counsel. He ruled that the affidavit supporting Adams’ claims was procedurally flawed because it was not sworn to by Adams himself or by someone informed by him. The court also held that Adams failed to prove that his phone line had been tapped by Igboho, even if the affidavit were admissible.

Consequently, the judge struck out the case and ordered Adams to pay N500,000 in costs.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
