The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has announced a lineup of non-combat activities to mark the Nigerian Army’s 162nd anniversary.
Speaking at a press briefing held at Army Headquarters in Abuja, Oluyede—represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Gold Chibuisi—reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and upholding democratic values.
This year’s celebration is themed “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive.”
“In recent times, our country has faced significant threats from enemies of peace and agents of chaos who have brought terrorism to our borders and created various internal security challenges,” Oluyede noted.
He stressed that the Nigerian Army has consistently responded to these threats, preventing terrorists from disrupting the nation’s socio-cultural fabric or undermining its sovereignty.
“The Nigerian Army will remain resolute in its mission to secure the lives of Nigerians and protect our democracy,” he added.
According to him, the annual Army Day Celebration serves as a platform to reflect on the Army’s achievements and to strengthen partnerships with stakeholders in the pursuit of national security and development.
Highlighting the “Soldier First” approach, Oluyede emphasized the Army’s renewed focus on personnel welfare, innovation, civil-military cooperation, and technological advancement to enhance operational readiness.
A series of activities have been scheduled to commemorate the event:
Jumat prayers and interdenominational services already held as spiritual observances aligned with the Army’s motto, “Victory is from God Alone.”Commissioning of civil-military cooperation projects across Kaduna State.A golf tournament, medical outreach, and charity programmes by the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association.Public engagement sessions in secondary schools across Army formations nationwide.A public lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, on July 5, followed by the COAS Annual Literary Competition award ceremony and a Gala Night at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Conference Centre, Murtala Mohammed Square, Kaduna. The grand finale on July 6 will feature a military parade, equipment exhibition, and the presentation of Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel.
