From Protector to Target: Was Dan-Bokolo Eliminated by Those He Fought For?

Published

on

A few days ago, news emerged that one of Nigeria’s most feared terrorists, Kachalla Yellow Dan-Bokolo, had finally met his end. According to reports, he died from injuries sustained during a fierce gun battle with the Shinkafi Volunteer Forces — a group of armed civilian fighters from Zamfara State who had grown weary of the devastation caused by his terror campaign.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

No fewer than 180 of Dan-Bokolo’s fighters were reportedly killed during the clash. However, questions remain about whether the Department of State Services (DSS) provided intelligence support to the volunteer fighters.

Just as the dust was beginning to settle on this unprecedented security breakthrough in Zamfara, prominent security blogger Zagazola entered the conversation, claiming the operation was actually spearheaded by the DSS, supported by so-called “hybrid forces” from Maiduguri—though what that term precisely means remains unclear.

But in a surprising twist, the Nigerian military has now stepped forward to claim full credit for the operation. Speaking on Tuesday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said it was a coordinated, intelligence-led offensive involving a joint team of security forces that confronted and engaged the terrorists.

During the engagement, according to General Kangye, Yellow Dan-Bokolo—who had tormented communities in Eastern Sokoto for nearly five years—suffered fatal gunshot wounds and died the following day (Monday).

This conflicting narrative leaves a puzzling picture: three distinct groups—the Shinkafi Volunteer Forces, the DSS, and the Nigerian military—are all being credited with the same kill. Clearly, three separate forces cannot simultaneously eliminate the same target. Notably, the DSS, now under new leadership that favours discretion, has remained silent amid the clashing claims. Meanwhile, the military—apparently late to the scene—is loudly proclaiming victory.

Something doesn’t add up. Somewhere in this tangled web of competing narratives, someone is clearly not telling the full truth about how Dan-Bokolo met his notorious end.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
