Royalty Reaffirmed: Ondo Monarch Celebrates Legal Triumph, Calls for Reconciliation
The traditional ruler of Daja Ajowa Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Yaya Obaniyi, has appealed to members of the community to rally behind his leadership.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Following a recent court victory affirming his legitimacy as monarch, Oba Obaniyi extended an olive branch to his challengers, urging them to set aside differences and work with him for the progress of the agrarian community.
A High Court in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government, delivered the verdict that solidified Obaniyi’s position as the Oludaja of Daja Ajowa-Akoko, bringing an end to years of litigation between feuding royal factions.
In his ruling, Justice Femi Akinbinu declared that Obaniyi—who had filed a counter-claim—successfully provided documentary evidence proving he was duly appointed in accordance with the law. The court also found no credible proof backing the claim that Chief S. O. Alaremu had been elected as Shaba, dismissing the assertion as baseless.
Reacting to the judgment, Oba Obaniyi urged aggrieved parties to “sheath their swords” and focus on unity and development. “We must prioritise the progress of our community over prolonged court battles,” he said.
Previously, some members of the Ibowe Clan of the Oyagi Ruling House had sued Obaniyi, the Akoko North-West Local Government Council, the Ondo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Attorney General, and the State Executive Council, seeking to overturn his appointment.
Obaniyi was initially appointed Shaba of Daja in 1997, in line with the Morgan Chieftaincy Declaration. According to local customs, the position of Shaba is a precursor to ascending the throne as Oludaja.
However, the plaintiffs, represented by Mr. Femi Emadamori, urged the court to invalidate Obaniyi’s promotion and withdraw his staff of office. Their suit was ultimately dismissed, solidifying Obaniyi’s position as the rightful monarch.
