The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has stated that the Nigerian Army has risen to the nation’s defence at critical moments, averting deeper crises and confronting forces of instability that have brought terrorism to Nigeria’s doorstep and fueled widespread internal security threats.

General Oluyede made this known during a media briefing on the events lined up to mark the 162nd anniversary of the Nigerian Army.

The Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), first held in 1978, commemorates the founding of the Army and the first shot of the Nigerian Civil War fired in Garkem, present-day Cross River State.

“The occasion gives us a moment to honour the valor and sacrifice of our officers and soldiers, both past and present,” Oluyede said. “This year, we are marking 162 years of unwavering service to Nigeria—a legacy of patriotism, loyalty, and commitment to safeguarding the nation and its people.”

He traced the Army’s origins to 1863, when Lieutenant Glover of the Royal Navy assembled 18 Hausa recruits from the North into a local force known as the “Glover Hausas.” Since then, the Army has grown in size and capability, confronting and overcoming numerous national and international security challenges. These include participation in both World Wars, prosecution of the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping efforts across West Africa, and contributing to stability across the continent.

“In recent times, the Army has stood firm against terrorists and other elements bent on disrupting national peace and unity. Despite complex security challenges, we have denied these enemies any opportunity to violate our sovereignty or destabilise our cultural foundations,” the Army Chief emphasized.

He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to protecting the Nigerian people and sustaining democracy, adding that NADCEL offers a platform to highlight the military’s achievements and strengthen collaboration with stakeholders for improved peace and security.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive,” Oluyede said the focus is to prioritise the welfare and capacity of soldiers as the cornerstone of a modern and responsive Army.

He highlighted the Army’s recent advancements in innovation, civil-military relations, and technology aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and equipping personnel for their constitutional duties.

Outlining scheduled activities for the 2025 celebration, Oluyede said events began with the customary Jumat Prayers and Interdenominational Church Services, reflecting the Army’s guiding motto, “Victory is from God Alone.”

“Today’s press briefing is part of our engagement efforts,” he said. “On Friday, July 4, we will commission multiple civil-military cooperation projects across Kaduna State, hold a golf tournament, conduct a free medical outreach, and carry out a Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association charity drive.”

Additionally, public speaking sessions will take place in selected secondary schools across Army formations nationwide. On Saturday, July 5, the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna will host a lecture on key national issues, followed by the awards ceremony for the 2nd Chief of Army Staff Annual Literary Competition. A Gala Night with officers and troops will follow later that evening at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Conference Centre, Murtala Muhammed Square, Kaduna.

The 2025 NADCEL Grand Finale will take place on Sunday, July 6, featuring a military parade, equipment display, and the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel.

FERMA’s South-East 2 Zonal Director, Suleiman Mohammed Omonowo, issued the warning during an inspection of the project, cautioning against the burning of tyres during celebrations, which he said could damage the road surface.

He noted that destructive practices by some youths and community members often contribute to the early failure of road projects across the country.

“Our advice to road users, especially indigenes, is to protect the road from destruction. Let nobody come and destroy it or burn tyres in the name of celebration,” he said.

Omonowo said the Aba–Azumini highway was previously in a very bad condition before FERMA intervened, describing it as a death trap for commuters and residents.

He also expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done on the project, adding that drainage structures such as catch pits would help prevent flooding and extend the lifespan of the road.

According to him, the highway serves as a major link between Aba, several Abia communities, and Cross River State, carrying heavy traffic daily.

He urged local construction firms to improve on quality delivery to compete effectively with foreign contractors.

Meanwhile, the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in Abia State, Festus Okafor, said FERMA workers have not faced harassment or violence from residents during operations in the state.

Court Orders UI To Reinstate Students Suspended Over Fee Hike Protest.

Published

The Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, has ordered the University of Ibadan (UI) to reinstate three students suspended over their participation in a protest against tuition fee hikes.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Delivering judgment on Wednesday, Justice Nkeonye Maha set aside the decision of the university’s Central Student Disciplinary Committee, ruling that the students were denied fair hearing during the disciplinary process.

The court held that the failure to allow the students call witnesses and present evidence violated their constitutional right to fair hearing, rendering the sanctions against them invalid.

The affected students — Aduwo Ayodele, Mide Gbadegesin, and Nice Linus — were suspended on July 14, 2025, after taking part in a protest against increased school fees approved by the university’s governing council.

Dissatisfied with the suspension, they approached the court, arguing that the disciplinary proceedings breached their fundamental rights and due process.

They asked the court to quash the suspension, reinstate their studentship, and award damages for alleged rights violations.

In her ruling, Justice Maha agreed with their arguments, stating that the university’s actions failed to meet the standards of natural justice.

Following the judgment, rights group CAPPA hailed the decision, urging the university to comply fully, reinstate the students, and issue an apology.

The group said the ruling reinforces constitutional protections for freedom of expression and serves as a warning against the suppression of student protests in tertiary institutions.
