“Rivers Truce Shakes Power Structure — Who Gained, Who Lost?”

As Rivers State marks the fifth month under a state of emergency, AMAECHI OKONKWO examines the tense anticipation surrounding the renewed peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu between suspended Governor Simi Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Last Thursday night, Rivers State once again took center stage in Nigeria’s national discourse following the announcement of a fresh truce between the main actors in the political crisis that has rocked the state since October 2023. The new peace deal—President Bola Tinubu’s second intervention—brought together suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his estranged political godfather and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and their supporters in a renewed pledge to work as a unified front in governing the state.

Accompanied by photos and video footage to underline the reconciliation, it was declared that both camps had agreed to put aside their differences and collaborate once again. Over the weekend, Fubara, Wike, and the suspended House of Assembly Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, were spotted together at a public event in Port Harcourt—the first time they had appeared side by side since the crisis erupted in November 2023.

At a stakeholders’ meeting with his supporters, Governor Fubara admitted the peace deal would come at a steep cost to himself and his loyalists. He said the agreement was necessary for the greater good of the state, even though it involved dismantling the various support groups that had stood by him during the standoff—retaining only the women’s prayer group.

Speaking to the “Simplified Stakeholders,” Fubara said:

“We’ve fought hard. Anyone honest enough knows we gave our all. But now, peace is the only path forward. I meant it when I said no price is too high for peace—and I’ll stand by that.”

He acknowledged Wike’s foundational role in his rise, noting:

“Nobody can erase the contributions of the FCT Minister. Yes, we’ve had our differences, but if today we must make peace, then it is the right thing to do.”

Fubara emphasized the importance of reconciliation over rivalry, appealing to his base for understanding and loyalty:

“I know this peace deal is painful, but it’s not about me—it’s about Rivers State. Many of our projects have stalled due to this crisis. We must fix that. I assure you, I won’t abandon you. We must be prepared for the sacrifice that true peace demands.”

Using a local metaphor, he added:

“In my place, there’s a fish called Atabala—Tilapia. It doesn’t grow large unless it hides in the mud. Sometimes, survival and growth require silence and strategy.”

FCT Teachers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Demands.

Published

on

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union also directed parents and guardians to keep their children at home until further notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns and what it described as government inaction.

This followed a communiqué issued after an emergency SWEC meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, over the weekend and signed by the state leadership of the union.

Teachers were instructed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions from the union leadership, as the industrial action remains in force until their demands are addressed.

According to the communiqué, the strike became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which elapsed without a satisfactory response.

The union recalled that although previous interventions led to the suspension of an earlier strike, several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare were still unresolved.

It also expressed concern that a committee set up to address outstanding entitlements submitted its report in August 2025, but the findings have not been made public or implemented.

While acknowledging the payment of the new minimum wage and some salary arrears, the union insisted that major concerns remain unattended.

The NUT further demanded reforms in promotion processes and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.

After what it described as unsuccessful engagements and expired deadlines, the union declared that all teachers in the FCT will remain on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.

He explained that the experience pushed him into deep reflection about his identity and life direction, describing it as a turning point that forced him to re-evaluate himself. He also noted that he could only speak from his own experience and not on behalf of his ex-wife.

Ikubese further revealed that the breakup brought him significant emotional pain and altered how he viewed life, eventually drawing him closer to his faith as he searched for answers.
