Behind the Lies: Plot to Undermine INEC and Nigeria’s Democracy Exposed
Relentless parochial and hypocritical attacks on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, have become the favourite pastime of certain self-styled moralists posing as patriots and opposition figures. However, their intentions are far from noble — it’s a thinly veiled attempt to secure a seat at the “national dining table.” Their strategy is clear: smear INEC to delegitimise it. Fortunately, their efforts are falling flat.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A growing chorus of hypocritical critics, draped in self-righteous cloaks of patriotism, has made a hobby of attacking the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. But beneath their constant barrage lies a transparent desperation—a calculated campaign to discredit the electoral body for selfish political gain and gain proximity to the “national dining table.” Their playbook is simple: malign INEC repeatedly to weaken public trust. Fortunately, they are failing.
One such example is the recent comment by Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation and Director-General of President Buhari’s 2019 campaign. In a puzzling interview, Amaechi claimed the APC wouldn’t have won the 2015 presidential election had Prof. Yakubu been in charge. But here’s the irony: Yakubu was INEC Chairman in 2019—when Buhari won re-election, under Amaechi’s own campaign leadership. At the time, Amaechi praised INEC and urged defeated candidates to show sportsmanship. His 2019 statement, “only those who fail elections gather for meetings while the winners pop champagne,” remains fresh in memory.
Fast-forward to 2023: Amaechi contested the APC presidential primary and lost. Ever since, he has turned his guns on INEC—an institution that didn’t even conduct the party primary. His shift reeks more of bitterness than principle.
The same goes for the echo chamber of Labour Party and PDP supporters who continue to insist they won the 2023 presidential election—despite a Supreme Court verdict affirming otherwise. These sore losers have not only targeted INEC but also launched vicious attacks on the judiciary, branding Justices as “compromised.” Their smear campaign against Prof. Yakubu has relied on fabrications, innuendo, and conspiracy theories. But to his credit, Yakubu has not dignified these provocations with a response.
Was the 2023 election perfect? Of course not. But where in the world is any election flawless? Certainly not the United States, the world’s democratic template, which faced a near-insurrection over its 2020 election. Despite imperfections, Nigeria’s 2023 general elections met the standard of substantial compliance and produced outcomes that reflected the will of the people.
Look at the facts. For the first time since 1999, four political parties won governorship seats. Seven parties secured Senate positions; eight parties won House of Representatives seats; and nine different parties earned seats in state assemblies. This level of diversity was unprecedented.
Under Prof. Yakubu’s leadership since 2015, INEC has rolled out critical innovations:
-
The Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which replaced the compromised Smart Card Reader (SCR), eliminated proxy voting and exposed vote buying schemes.
-
The creation of 56,872 new polling units—the first expansion in 25 years—improved voter access.
-
An online registration portal empowered 9.5 million new voters between 2021 and 2022.
-
INEC pioneered Africa’s first COVID-era election policy in 2020, safely conducting elections when many global democracies stalled.
-
The commission successfully advocated for the Electoral Act 2022, which empowered it to reject forced declarations and receive election funding a year in advance.
One of INEC’s biggest game-changers remains the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), which allows real-time polling unit results to be viewed by citizens. Though a temporary glitch occurred during the presidential election, the IReV significantly expanded electoral transparency.
Inclusivity has also improved. INEC established a Department of Gender and Inclusivity, ensuring better participation of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) through accessible polling booths, magnifying glasses, braille guides, and other tools.
These achievements stand as a bulwark against the cynicism of professional naysayers. Their campaign to destroy INEC is fueled not by love for democracy, but by narrow ambitions and political vendettas. In trying to demonise one of Nigeria’s most reform-minded institutions, they are only exposing themselves.
Thankfully, the facts still matter—and the truth will always outlive conspiracy.
