Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Batch A Stream II orientation course held at the NYSC camp in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area, on Tuesday, the governor—represented by the Commissioner for Youth, Sports Development, and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange—reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare and protection of corps members.

Governor Alia also issued a stern warning to heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) against rejecting corps members posted to their establishments.

“I wish to remind all corps employers, especially in government ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as the private sector, that the policy of non-rejection of corps members remains in force,” he stated. “Any agency head who flouts this directive risks appropriate sanctions.”

Acknowledging the security challenges facing parts of the state due to recent unprovoked attacks on communities, Alia noted that the government has intensified efforts through constant engagement with security agencies and stakeholders to restore peace and stability.

“We are working tirelessly to address the insecurity through coordinated interventions. With the latest deployment of security forces to high-risk areas, I assure you of your safety throughout your service year in Benue State,” he said.

Earlier, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Veronica Garba, encouraged the corps members to represent the scheme and their families with integrity at their various places of primary assignment.

“As you head to your places of posting, I urge you to be worthy ambassadors of the NYSC, your families, and your alma maters,” she said. “Steer clear of actions that could tarnish your image or that of the scheme—especially drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism, bribery, and related misconduct.”

Yilwatda made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, stressing that membership of the APC is voluntary and not forced on anyone.

According to him, Wike remains at liberty to decide his political future, and there is no obligation for appointees to formally join the ruling party before serving in government.

“If he wants to join the APC, he is free. We don’t compel people to join; they do so willingly,” he said.

He added that cross-party appointments are not new in Nigeria’s political history, noting that past administrations also appointed members of opposition parties into key positions.

Yilwatda cited examples such as Bala Mohammed and Adamu Aliero, who served as ministers under PDP governments despite being affiliated with other parties at the time.

He questioned the criticism directed at President Bola Tinubu over Wike’s appointment, arguing that similar decisions were taken by previous administrations without controversy.

The APC chairman also pointed to other non-APC members serving in the current government, saying Wike should not be singled out.

He further stated that Wike obtained approval from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before accepting the ministerial appointment in 2023.

Yilwatda maintained that President Tinubu has continued to demonstrate openness by appointing individuals across party lines based on competence.
