The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed that the individuals were part of a cybercrime syndicate dismantled during a sting operation conducted in Lagos on December 19, 2024.
According to a statement posted on the EFCC’s official account, the convicts were among 792 suspects arrested in connection with alleged cryptocurrency investment scams and romance frauds targeting Nigerians.
The 14 were arraigned before Justice Daniel Osiagor on various charges bordering on cyber-terrorism and internet fraud.
One of the charges specifically alleged that Su Zong Gen, in December 2024, deliberately accessed a computer network with intent to destabilise Nigeria’s economy and social fabric — an act considered a threat to national security.
While the defendants initially pleaded not guilty, they later changed their pleas to guilty during Friday’s court proceedings.
Prosecution counsel T.J. Banjo and M.S. Owede urged the court to convict the defendants in line with their new plea. The defence team raised no objection.
Justice Osiagor subsequently sentenced each of the 14 individuals to one year imprisonment, with an option of ₦1 million fine.
The judge further directed that the convicts be deported to China within seven days of completing their jail terms or paying the fines, as supervised by the Nigeria Immigration Service.
In addition, all items recovered during their arrest were ordered forfeited to the Federal Government.
Those convicted include: Su Zong Gen, Li Zhong Chang, Chen Gui Ping, Li Xiang Long, San Feng Zhang, Jia Yang, Jia Zhi Hao, Liu Chuang, Yu Hai Ging, Zhao Xiao Liang, Dai Li, Tao Kun, Mao Bu Yi, and Zhao Zi Cheng.
