Freedom Floodgates Open – 7,500 Prisoners Released in One of Nigeria’s Largest Amnesty Moves
At least 7,646 inmates have been released from correctional facilities across Nigeria between January 2022 and June 2025, as both federal and state governments ramp up efforts to tackle the longstanding issue of overcrowding in custodial centres.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Findings by our correspondent on Friday revealed that the releases were facilitated by a combination of federal and state authorities, chief judges, and various non-governmental organisations, highlighting a growing momentum behind prison decongestion initiatives.
Breakdown of available data from media reports shows that 707 inmates were released in 2022, 4,678 in 2023, and 1,843 in 2024, while 418 inmates have been freed so far in 2025.
The mass release primarily focused on inmates unable to pay court-imposed fines. These interventions were supported by corporate donations amounting to ₦585 million as part of companies’ corporate social responsibility schemes.
According to Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the initiative has saved the government approximately ₦1 billion in feeding costs for the released inmates.
Despite these efforts, Nigeria’s correctional centres remain severely congested. The latest data from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) indicates that the custodial system is currently holding 81,746 inmates, a figure significantly higher than its intended capacity of just over 50,000.
Of the total population, 54,013 inmates are awaiting trial, many facing serious charges such as armed robbery, murder, and culpable homicide.
Speaking on the development, NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar told our correspondent that the Federal Government is taking concrete steps to ease the pressure on existing correctional infrastructure, including the construction of two new mega correctional centres—one in Rivers State and another in the Federal Capital Territory—each designed to accommodate 6,000 inmates.
