Blood and Business Flow Again: Lagos Lifts Ban on Oko-Oba Slaughterhouse
The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate reopening of the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege, following the operators’ compliance with sanitation and hygiene standards.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The facility was sealed on June 19 due to what authorities described as serious environmental infractions and improper operational practices.
In an update posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the abattoir operators had now “substantially complied with the minimum operational benchmarks” required by the state.
“These benchmarks were initially violated, prompting the closure,” he said.
As part of the conditions for reopening, Wahab disclosed that the Ministry would now conduct monthly inspections to ensure continued compliance.
In a separate statement issued on Friday, the Ministry warned the operators to steer clear of unsanitary practices, poor waste management, and unhygienic handling of animal products as they resume operations.
Wahab had earlier expressed strong disapproval during a pre-closure inspection of the abattoir, where he observed alarming lapses.
“They slaughter animals and discharge waste directly into the public drainage system — it’s completely unacceptable,” he stated in a video shared during the inspection.
He also decried the presence of individuals sleeping within the market premises alongside livestock, labelling the situation as both unsafe and unhygienic.
Following the closure, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps dismantled illegal structures built along drainage paths within the abattoir.
The Ministry stressed that it will continue to work in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture to ensure sustained improvements in hygiene and operational standards at the facility.
