LG Election Countdown: Lagos APC Grapples With Internal Feud As NSC Clears Air on Ofili-Turkey Rumours

Published

Hon. Bukola Olopade has dismissed growing speculation over Favour Ofili’s alleged defection to Turkey, insisting the sprinter remains fully committed to representing Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at a World Press Conference in Abuja on Wednesday ahead of the Confederation of African Athletics U-18 and U-20 Championships, Olopade—who also chairs the event’s Local Organising Committee—clarified that there has been no official indication of any nationality switch.

“Favour Ofili is still representing Nigeria. She wrote to the NSC two months ago, reaffirming her commitment to compete for the country,” Olopade said. “When I assumed duty as Director General of the NSC, I personally reached out to her, and she confirmed her allegiance to Nigeria.”

He further noted that Ofili was among the 69 athletes who received financial support from the National Sports Commission in April 2025, reinforcing her active status within Nigeria’s athletics programme.

“There has been no formal communication from any international federation or national athletics body indicating that she has changed allegiance. As far as the NSC is concerned, she remains a Nigerian athlete,” Olopade stated.

The NSC’s position comes amid widespread media reports suggesting that Ofili—the world record holder in the women’s 150m and one of Nigeria’s brightest medal hopefuls—was considering a switch to Turkey. The rumour has sparked heated conversations in Nigeria’s sports community.

Reacting to the reports, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) President Tonobok Okowa expressed concern, acknowledging that past gaps in athlete welfare could have contributed to her possible discontent.

“If this is true, it’s sad and painful,” Okowa said. “But so far, we haven’t received any official communication from her or World Athletics. She is an adult and has the right to make her own choices, but for us, it’s a hard pill to swallow.”

If Ofili were to switch allegiances, World Athletics rules would impose a mandatory three-year ineligibility period due to her participation for Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Olympics—meaning she wouldn’t be able to represent Turkey in global competitions until at least 2027.

Such a move would place her among several Nigerian-born athletes who have gone on to represent other countries, including Francis Obikwelu (Portugal), Gloria Alozie (Spain), Florence Ekpo-Umoh (Germany), Femi Ogunode (Qatar), and Salwa Eid Naser (Bahrain).

Persistent reports suggest that the Turkish Athletics Federation has offered attractive incentives to top African athletes in a bid to bolster its global competitiveness—a practice critics say is draining Africa’s sporting talent pool.

For now, World Athletics still lists Favour Ofili as a Nigerian athlete on its official database, and she remains eligible to compete at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo, slated for September 13–21.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
