LG Elections Countdown: Lagos APC Accused of Sidestepping Electoral Guidelines

The Adamawa State Government has officially stripped former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of his prestigious traditional title, Waziri of Adamawa, citing newly established indigeneship requirements for holding positions within the emirate council.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a circular dated June 20, 2025, and signed by Mrs. Adama Felicity Mamman, Permanent Secretary of the Department of Chieftaincy Affairs, the revocation is part of a broader overhaul of traditional leadership structures prompted by the creation of new chiefdoms under Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s administration.

The Waziri title, historically regarded as the second highest-ranking position after the Lamido of Adamawa, is now restricted to individuals from Yola South, Yola North, Girei, Mayo-Belwa, Song, and Zumo districts. Atiku, a native of Jada Local Government Area—which falls under the Ganye Chiefdom—no longer qualifies under the revised policy.

The directive stressed that the restriction applies not only to Atiku but to all current council members and titleholders whose lineage originates outside the approved districts, triggering widespread changes in traditional leadership across the state.

While the state government maintains that the measure is purely administrative, political analysts believe the move may have deeper implications. Observers point to the simmering tensions between Governor Fintiri and Atiku, both influential figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections.

Atiku’s recent closeness to political figures like Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Senator Aishatu Binani has further fueled speculation of a potential realignment ahead of the 2027 polls, possibly contributing to the fallout.

The timing of the revocation also coincides with a controversial bill before the Adamawa State House of Assembly, seeking to grant the governor unilateral authority to remove traditional rulers and appoint successors without traditional council or community input. Critics warn that if passed, the legislation could severely undermine the independence of traditional institutions and hand excessive control to the executive arm of government.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.
