The announcement was made on Tuesday during Okoye’s courtesy visit to the governor at the Lion Building, Enugu. According to PUNCH Online, the visit centred on leveraging sports to uplift the state’s youth and drive economic growth.

“Today, I was delighted to receive Maduka Okoye, a true son of Enugu and the Super Eagles’ top goalkeeper, at the Lion Building,” Governor Mbah stated. “Beyond making us proud on the international stage, Maduka is passionate about giving back to his roots.”

Governor Mbah revealed that Okoye plans to establish a football academy and a charitable foundation in Enugu aimed at nurturing local talents and inspiring future sports stars. In support of the initiative, the state will allocate land for the academy and has invited Okoye to participate in the upcoming Enugu International Marathon, which is expected to draw elite athletes globally.

“In recognition of his accomplishments and dedication, I am proud to name him an ambassador of Enugu State. He will serve as a role model for our children, especially in our Smart Green Schools, encouraging a new generation of achievers,” the governor added.

Okoye, who featured in all 25 Serie A matches for Udinese in the 2024/25 season, helping the club secure a 12th-place finish, was visibly moved by the honour.

“It’s truly special to be welcomed home by His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah,” the 25-year-old said. “This is a memorable moment for me, as we discussed ways to promote both economic and sporting excellence in our beloved state. I’m grateful for the governor’s warm reception and for this great honour.”

Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, to a Nigerian father from Enugu and a German mother, Okoye has been capped 16 times by Nigeria. Recently recalled to the national team after a six-month absence, he featured in a friendly against Russia in Moscow.

In the 2024/25 season, Okoye maintained strong form, keeping four clean sheets, averaging 7.3 ball recoveries per game, and maintaining a 76% pass completion rate—with over 91% accuracy in his own half—despite a single goal-conceding error. His commanding presence and distribution continue to earn praise from fans and analysts alike.

President Tinubu has given full backing for the implementation of the ₦68.32 trillion 2026 budget after signing the Appropriation Bill passed by the National Assembly into law.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.
