Vice Presidency Twist: Northern Youths Push Tinubu to Pick Senate Deputy as Running Mate

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been strongly advised to consider selecting Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, as his vice-presidential running mate in the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The call came from the Northern Nigeria’s Progressive Youths Assembly, a socio-political group advocating for a strategic realignment within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), especially in light of recent tensions and speculations surrounding the future of incumbent Vice President Kashim Shettima.

In a statement issued by the group, they argued that nominating a “marketable” and influential figure like Senator Barau Jibrin would represent a well-calculated political move.

“It will not be an impulsive decision if President Bola Tinubu chooses Senator Barau Jibrin as his running mate for the 2027 elections. Selecting a candidate with broad appeal is a critical political strategy for any serious contender seeking executive office,” the group stated.

The group pointed to APC’s strong performance in Kano during the 2023 general elections—despite it being the home state of NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso—as a testament to Senator Barau’s political clout. They highlighted that APC secured 517,341 votes in Kano, nearly double the votes received in Borno State, where Shettima hails from.

“This electoral success can largely be attributed to Senator Barau’s widespread grassroots influence. In his Kano North Senatorial District, only one APC House of Representatives candidate lost, further demonstrating his political dominance,” the statement noted.

The group urged President Tinubu to be meticulous in his choice of running mate ahead of 2027, warning that a misstep could prove costly.

They further praised Barau for his respectful political demeanor, stating:

“Senator Barau is known for his humility and discipline. He has never publicly disrespected any past or present leader. His values reflect a deep sense of integrity and maturity, which are rare traits in today’s political landscape.”

Citing results from the 2023 presidential election, the group argued that the North-East region leaned more toward PDP’s Atiku Abubakar than Tinubu. They presented detailed vote tallies from all six North-East states to support their claim:

  • Borno State: Tinubu – 252,282; Atiku – 190,921

  • Yobe State: Atiku – 198,567; Tinubu – 151,459

  • Bauchi State: Atiku – 426,607; Tinubu – 316,694

  • Gombe State: Atiku – 319,123; Tinubu – 146,977

  • Taraba State: Atiku – 189,017; Tinubu – 135,165

  • Adamawa State: Atiku – 417,611; Tinubu – 182,881

“These results indicate a clear preference for Atiku across the North-East and should prompt President Tinubu to rethink his 2027 electoral strategy,” they argued.

The group also raised concerns over speculated efforts by some presidential aides to impose either Rabiu Kwankwaso or National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as potential running mates.

“President Tinubu must resist these internal pressures and instead consider the electoral math and public sentiment. Senator Barau offers both political strength and moral credibility,” the group concluded.

Speaking during a recent interview on Jay On Air TV, the broadcaster recounted her father’s fearless pro-democracy activism, detailing how his defiance against military dictatorship led to state intimidation, imprisonment, and eventual exile.

Imprisoned Alongside Beko Ransome-Kuti

According to Morayo, her father’s relentless public criticism of the Babangida regime made him a prime target for state security forces, leading to frequent harassment and detentions.

Key details shared during the interview include:

  • Relentless Persecution: Her father faced constant surveillance and intimidation due to his vocal stance against harmful government policies.

  • Shared Prison Cells: He was detained multiple times, sharing cell blocks with prominent human rights crusaders, including the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti.

  • Forced Into Exile: As threats from the military government intensified, remaining in Nigeria became untenable, forcing him to flee the country to escape state-sponsored retaliation.

A Legacy of Courage and Conviction

Reflecting on how her father’s political battles shaped her personal outlook, Morayo highlighted his refusal to be silenced in the face of tyranny as her main inspiration.

“My father was an activist; I grew up knowing he was one of Babangida’s top enemies. Babangida deeply despised him and hated him with passion.

My father shared prison cells with Beko Ransome-Kuti and others. He had to go into exile because Babangida was chasing him.”

She added that witnessing his bravery firsthand instilled in her a lifelong commitment to speaking truth to power and standing firmly for her beliefs.

ACF SLAMS PETER OBI: “Nobody Appointed Him As A Mediator Between North And South!”

Published

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the apex socio-cultural group of Northern Nigeria, has outrightly dismissed the reported one-term presidential agreement between Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The ACF labeled the secret arrangement illegal, unconstitutional, and a product of pure political desperation.

“Nobody Sent Them to Negotiate for North or South”

Speaking in an interview with Leadership, the ACF National Publicity Secretary, Tukur Muhammad Baba, emphasized that neither Obi nor Kwankwaso possesses the authority to negotiate power rotation between the regions:

  • No Mandate: Nobody commissioned either candidate to broker a presidential deal between the North and the South.

  • Self-Interest: The pact is driven strictly by personal political ambitions rather than public service.

  • Unconstitutional Concept: Leadership rotation is strictly an internal political party affair, not a constitutional requirement, and cannot be forced onto the nation.

Why ACF Wants Voters to Reject the NDC Ticket

Baba argued that rather than convincing Northern voters to support their campaign, the one-term agreement is a strong reason for Nigerians to reject both candidates at the 2027 polls.

“Suppose Peter Obi wins by chance and performs exceptionally well; would it make sense to force him out after just four years for an unproven candidate? It simply makes no sense,” Baba stated.

“Nigerian politicians should not act as if attaining power is all that matters. The fact that they signed such an agreement shows they do not wish this country well.”
