“Transfer Turmoil: Athletic Club Fans Turn on Nico Williams Over Barca Exit Rumours”
As speculation around Nico Williams’ potential exit intensifies, his hometown has witnessed the first major wave of public backlash.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
As the prospect of Nico Williams leaving Athletic Club grows stronger, the first visible backlash has erupted in his hometown.
A mural in Barakaldo, a municipality in the Basque Country, originally featuring Nico and his older brother Iñaki Williams, has been defaced. In the early hours of Sunday, unidentified individuals removed Nico’s image from the artwork. In its place now stands not only a blank space but a bold message expressing disapproval.
The mural was first unveiled in March 2024 to celebrate Athletic Club’s Copa del Rey victory. Over time, it was expanded to include other club legends like Iker Muniain and Oscar De Marcos. However, the recent act of vandalism reflects the deepening rift among fans who feel betrayed by Nico’s potential switch to Barcelona.
Barcelona Moving Swiftly Behind the Scenes
Despite the local outrage, Nico’s transfer to Barcelona appears increasingly likely. The club’s sporting director, Deco, has confirmed that efforts are well underway to finalise the deal.
Meanwhile, the player’s agent, Felix Tainta, is negotiating with Athletic Club to accept a staggered payment plan—allowing Barça to pay the €58 million release clause in instalments. Factoring in inflation and terms, the total fee could rise to €62 million unless both sides reach a favourable compromise soon.
If all goes as planned, Nico Williams could soon be donning the Blaugrana jersey—realising a career dream, even if it means alienating many in the community that first celebrated him.
