These bombers, capable of flying 9,600 kilometers without refueling, are engineered to infiltrate even the most advanced air defense systems and strike heavily fortified targets. To maintain the element of surprise, a clever decoy tactic was used: some B-2s flew westward over the Pacific, while the strike bombers flew east, a maneuver known only to a handful of top military planners. “Iran’s air defenses never saw us coming. Their fighter jets stayed grounded, and their surface-to-air missile systems failed to detect our approach,” Caine said. During the mission, the B-2s dropped 14 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (GBU-57) — 30,000-pound bunker-busting bombs capable of drilling up to 200 feet underground before detonating. This was the first time the GBU-57 had been used in combat. The operation also involved Tomahawk cruise missiles, launched from a U.S. Navy submarine stationed in the Middle East. Over two dozen of these precision-guided missiles struck critical infrastructure targets in Isfahan, one of the three nuclear sites hit. These low-flying, subsonic missiles, guided by multiple advanced navigation systems, were first used during the 1991 Gulf War and have since been a staple in U.S. military strategy. General Caine’s briefing painted the operation as a stunning display of U.S. airpower, strategic deception, and technological superiority — a warning shot and a statement of intent in a rapidly escalating conflict.
