FG Reaffirms Support for Press Freedom, Partners NUJ to Tackle Journalism Challenges

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has restated the federal government’s unwavering support for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in confronting the growing challenges facing journalism in the digital era.

Speaking at the 70th Anniversary Gala, Award Night, and Book Presentation of the NUJ held in Abuja on Saturday, Mr Idris reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s strong commitment to press freedom, describing a vibrant and responsible media as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

He highlighted emerging threats to journalism, including the influence of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), the spread of disinformation, and the rise of unregulated citizen journalism.

“The emergence of generative AI has added a new layer of complexity, flooding the public space with deepfakes and sophisticated misinformation,” the minister said. “Let me reiterate what I’ve said repeatedly: the Tinubu administration remains firmly committed to protecting press freedom as a vital pillar of democracy.”

He noted that the government is working closely with the NUJ to address structural and operational issues in the media space, such as improving journalists’ welfare, promoting gender equity, and accelerating digital adaptation.

“We are eager to collaborate with you to overcome these challenges and help the media reposition itself for the rapidly evolving 21st-century environment,” Idris added.

Former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Chief Segun Osoba, also addressed the gathering, urging the NUJ to overcome internal divisions and maintain professional standards.

“I’ve been a proud member of the NUJ for nearly 70 years,” Osoba said. “The union must establish a comprehensive database of trained journalists to distinguish professionals from untrained bloggers who often bring disrepute to the profession.”

In a keynote lecture titled “Prospects and Problems of Journalism Practice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, Dr. Tender Akanni, Head of Journalism at Lagos State University, noted that AI is now integral to newsrooms, streamlining information production and dissemination.

However, he cautioned that AI poses ethical dilemmas: “AI must be complemented by human judgment. It can mislead if not properly guided, and this reinforces the need for rigorous fact-checking.”

A posthumous Life Achievement Award was conferred on the late former Lagos State Governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, in recognition of his contributions to journalism and public service.

The event drew dignitaries from the media industry, the Presidency, National Assembly, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Nigerian Customs, and other key institutions.

APC Fires Back at Adeleke Over ₦300bn LG Funds Allegation, Blames Governor for Salary Crisis....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.

Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.

He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.

APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.

The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
