Niger State’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, didn’t hold back when he visited the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Minna. He boldly claimed that if not for the fierce pushback by Nigerian journalists, former President Olusegun Obasanjo might have succeeded in his controversial bid for a third term in office.
According to Vatsa, the media played a decisive role in defending democracy and stopping what could have been a dangerous precedent. “Without the powerful voice of the Nigerian press, Obasanjo could have remained in power indefinitely, and our current democratic system might not exist,” he said.
Vatsa used the occasion to express the Niger State Government’s renewed commitment to working closely with journalists, calling for more open and productive collaboration. He acknowledged past disconnects, especially with the Correspondents Chapel, but emphasized the urgent need to rebuild trust and cooperation.
“The truth is, no government can truly succeed without the media. Smart leaders know this and use the media to their advantage—not just for publicity but to drive real change,” he added.
He called on political leaders to foster stronger ties with the media, stating, “Let’s not widen the gap. Let’s strengthen it. A better partnership will benefit both sides—and ultimately, the people.”
