Food Inflation Imminent! Farmers Desert Nasarawa Farmlands After Benue Slaughter

Published

on

Farming communities along the Benue–Nasarawa border have deserted their homes and farmlands following a deadly attack that left more than 200 people dead in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State. The massacre, allegedly carried out by suspected herdsmen, has sparked widespread panic and a mass exodus of residents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Investigations indicate that farmers across the border areas have fled to urban centres, abandoning their crops at the peak of the planting season—a development that could severely impact food production.

A visit to Keana, Obi, Doma, and Awe Local Government Areas in Nasarawa State revealed that many of the displaced persons are now sheltering in nearby towns. Tersoo Fatu, a farmer from Tse Agan in Keana, described the desperate situation:

“After the Yelwata killings, everyone ran. No one wants to be the next victim. This is our planting season, but we had to leave our maize, yam, guinea corn, and cassava just to stay alive.”

Tiv communities in Kadarko, Doma, and Lafia are reportedly overwhelmed by the influx of fleeing families. The Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Kadarko Primary School is overcrowded, with basic amenities stretched beyond capacity.

Simon Tion, speaking from Lafia, confirmed that more than ten Tiv-dominated settlements near Yelwata have been completely abandoned:

“Tiv residents in Nasarawa are living in fear. The Fulani herders keep attacking and killing our people—especially farmers near the border.”

The humanitarian crisis is deepening by the day. The IDP camp lacks access to food, clean water, healthcare, proper sanitation, and security. The absence of toilets, sleeping arrangements, and fencing is putting already vulnerable individuals at severe health risk.

As farmlands lie fallow and thousands remain displaced, fears are mounting over the potential rise in food scarcity and inflation across the region. The consequences of this displacement, observers warn, may soon ripple far beyond the border communities.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
