Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, and legal icon Dr. Wale Babalakin were among several dignitaries who paid glowing tributes to the late former Governor of Oyo State, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, as final burial rites commenced with a symposium in Ibadan.
Olunloyo, who passed away on April 6 at the age of 90, was remembered as a rare intellectual force whose brilliance spanned academics, politics, and leadership.
Speaking as chairman of the event, Obasanjo described Olunloyo as not just a scholar and man of letters, but a true genius. He recounted fond memories of their long-standing relationship and the depth of Olunloyo’s intellect.
“With Omololu, anything he touched, he did with ease—almost too easily,” Obasanjo said. “He studied engineering and yet excelled as a mathematician. It all came naturally to him, like play.”
He added that beyond Olunloyo’s intellectual prowess, he had a unique personality: “You couldn’t talk about Omololu without acknowledging that side of him many described as political rascality or playfulness. I actually enjoyed that side. He would always appear unserious at first, but what came out of him was always profound and deeply serious.”
Obasanjo recalled their time in the old Western Region government in 1965, under General Adebayo, where Olunloyo’s political allegiance was difficult to classify. “He wasn’t clearly for either Awolowo or Akintola—he was somewhere in between. But that was Omololu: deeply independent in thought.”
He described Olunloyo as “a very serious man wrapped in layers of brilliance, wit, and intellect that only a few could truly understand.”
Also speaking at the event, Prof. Wole Soyinka hailed Olunloyo as a “mathematical genius whose legacy will remain indelible.” He noted that Olunloyo’s impact in academia and politics was profound and far-reaching.
Dr. Wale Babalakin, Global President of the Government College Ibadan (GCI) Old Boys Association—Olunloyo’s alma mater—described the late governor as “a genius among geniuses.” He praised GCI for producing exceptional minds, saying, “There is no secondary school in Nigeria that has produced more geniuses than ours. We’re proud to count Olunloyo among our own.”
Other dignitaries in attendance included the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin; President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Barrister Niyi Ajewole; Senator Kola Balogun; and former Chief of Staff to Governor Seyi Makinde, Chief Bisi Ilaka, among others.
