Governor Umar Bago, represented by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, made this known on Tuesday in Minna while receiving a condolence delegation led by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer to the late General Sani Abacha.
According to official figures, the disaster has so far claimed 207 lives, with over 3,000 households displaced. The flood also destroyed nearly 400 houses, including 283 residential buildings and 50 shops that were completely wiped out.
Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Governor Bago stated that the state government is working alongside experts to identify the root causes of the flooding. Findings from these investigations are still pending.
Major Al-Mustapha, leading a team of sympathisers from across the country, said their visit was not only to offer condolences but also to explore ways to prevent a recurrence. He added that the delegation would also meet with the Mokwa traditional council.
Governor Bago further disclosed that non-indigenes constituted more than half of the affected population in the May 29 disaster.
Speaking during the receipt of relief materials from Veritas University, Abuja, the governor—again represented by his deputy—noted that documentation of victims is ongoing. This includes gathering bank details to enable cash disbursements from public donations.
Although the total amount received in donations has not yet been disclosed by the Accountant General, the government estimates that each affected household will receive at least ₦1 million. Host families sheltering displaced persons will also receive assistance.
The Veritas University delegation, led by Rev. Dr. Peter Bakwaph on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, donated 150 mattresses, mosquito repellents, and other critical supplies. The university noted that some of its students lost family members in the disaster.
