Not Tinubu’s Opponents! – Oshiomhole Defends National Assembly’s Role Amid Criticism
Senator Adams Oshiomhole has pushed back against critics who label the 10th National Assembly as a “rubber stamp,” asserting that lawmakers were not elected to clash with President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, former Edo State Governor and current senator for Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, dismissed claims that the 10th National Assembly is a “rubber stamp,” calling the accusation both unfair and a misunderstanding of the legislature’s democratic role.
He questioned the logic behind such criticisms, stating, “Is our job to go and start boxing the presidency just to show we’re independent? That would make us a bunch of rascals. Is that what Nigerians elected us to do?”
Oshiomhole challenged detractors to identify any law passed by the Assembly that is detrimental to Nigerians, emphasizing that all bills undergo thorough debate before approval.
“Name one harmful law we’ve passed without serious scrutiny,” he urged.
He also pointed to several interventions by lawmakers, such as his own efforts to address the exploitation of Nigerians by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), as evidence that the Assembly is fulfilling its oversight duties.
“The idea that opposing the executive at every turn is the only sign of independence is misguided,” he added. “We deliberate, we debate, and we act in the country’s best interest—not for show.”
His comments follow increasing public criticism over the perceived closeness between the legislature and the presidency, raising concerns about the strength of checks and balances in Nigeria’s democracy.
