Gunfire erupted near the Loon-Plage migrant camp outside Dunkirk on Sunday, killing one person and seriously injuring two others, according to a police source on Monday. The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.
The incident came just a day after a similar shooting near the same camp—which houses over 1,500 migrants—claimed the life of a 24-year-old Sudanese man. Many of the camp’s residents are migrants hoping to cross the English Channel to the UK.
Police told AFP that all victims of Saturday’s shooting were Sudanese nationals, including a child among the injured. Authorities have since arrested two suspects: a 29-year-old man claiming to be Iraqi and a 16-year-old who identified as Afghan. Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into murder and attempted murder by an organised group.
France and the UK have vowed to intensify their crackdown on people-smuggling networks that charge migrants large sums to make the dangerous sea journey in overcrowded and often unsafe boats.
British officials reported that 919 migrants arrived via the Channel on Friday alone, travelling in 14 small vessels. At least 15 people have died in similar attempts this year, while a record 78 deaths were recorded by French authorities in 2024—the highest since these crossings began in 2018. Over 36,800 people made the journey in 2024, marking a 25% increase from the previous year.
