Freedom for Kanu, Justice for Anioma – Senator Issues Explosive Ultimatum to FG!”
Senator Osita Izunaso, who represents Imo West in the National Assembly, has called on the Federal Government to release the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on bail.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Friday to mark his two years in the Senate, Izunaso emphasized that a political solution remains the most effective approach to resolving Kanu’s case.
He argued that granting Kanu bail could significantly reduce violence in the South-East, as criminal elements who have hijacked the movement would lose any perceived legitimacy. This, he said, would allow authorities to take firmer action against such individuals if they continue to engage in violence.
“I have consistently advocated that the Federal Government explore a political resolution to Nnamdi Kanu’s case. If he is granted bail, it could drastically reduce insecurity in the region. The original movement has been taken over by criminal actors, and releasing Kanu would strip them of any legitimacy,” he stated.
While acknowledging that bail and dialogue may not completely eliminate violence, the senator said it would substantially lower tensions.
“I’m not claiming it will solve everything, but it will certainly help. Once the core of the agitation is addressed, any continued violence becomes a matter of criminality,” he added.
Push for Anim State
Senator Izunaso also revealed that a bill proposing the creation of a new state, Anim State, in the South-East has passed second reading in the Senate and is currently being reviewed by the committee on constitutional amendment.
He explained that the proposed state would be carved out of parts of Anambra and Imo states and insisted that the move is rooted in fairness and equity.
“This isn’t about privilege; it’s about justice. Every other geopolitical zone has six states, but the South-East has only five. We are merely asking for what is due under the federal character principle,” Izunaso said.
He assured that the process for the creation of Anim State would follow all legal and democratic procedures.
