We Missed the Global Boom Because of a Thief!’ – Abiola’s Son Slams Nigeria’s Past Leader”

Published

Jamiu Abiola, Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Linguistics and Foreign Affairs, has stated that Nigeria would have experienced significant economic progress if his late father, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, had been allowed to assume the presidency following his victory in the 1993 election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Channels Television’s June 12 Special Forum to commemorate 26 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, Jamiu emphasized that the early 1990s presented a rare global economic boom, which Nigeria tragically missed due to poor leadership.

He lamented, “That period—1993—was globally significant. The world was enjoying an economic boom, and Nigeria could have leveraged that momentum. But instead, we ended up with a kleptomaniac as head of state. I won’t dwell too much on General Sani Abacha; he had his own issues.”

Jamiu also voiced frustration over attempts to erase his father’s legacy from Nigeria’s democratic history. “Years after the election was annulled and decades after my father’s death, I noticed people were intentionally trying to rewrite Nigeria’s history without mentioning Chief MKO Abiola. Foreign leaders would reference past Nigerian presidents like Yar’Adua, but leave out my father. It was as though they wanted to shave his head in his absence,” he said.

To counter this, Jamiu revealed he authored a book in 2015 titled “The President Who Never Ruled,” in a bid to preserve his father’s legacy.

Referring to former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida’s book, where he admitted Abiola won the 1993 election, Jamiu questioned why that truth was not acted upon after Abacha’s death. “IBB claimed Abacha was the reason the election was annulled. But when Abacha died and General Abdulsalami Abubakar—who was IBB’s friend—took over, nothing was done. He could have at least urged Abdulsalami to release Abiola for medical treatment. Even if the annulment stood, Abiola might have survived had he received proper care.”

In a post shared on social media, Fayose questioned Atiku’s decision to return to the ballot, arguing that it goes against current political expectations on power rotation.

He claimed that Atiku’s continued ambition would indirectly benefit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, suggesting it could split opposition chances in 2027.

Fayose insisted that it is time for the South to complete its political cycle, adding that Atiku’s repeated bids for the presidency were unfair and out of step with current realities.

He dismissed the claim, stating that the individuals who announced the suspension have no powers to take such disciplinary action.

The controversy followed a press briefing by a factional chairman in Adamawa, Raji Zumo, who announced the suspension of Atiku, Lawal, and transition committee chairman Sadiq Ibrahim over alleged anti-party activities.
