Segun Sowunmi Sparks Defection Rumour: Could He Join APC After 28 Years in PDP?

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has hinted at a strong likelihood of leaving the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sowunmi revealed that he would consider switching parties if supporting President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027 required such a move. He made the revelation during an interview on Prime Time with Arise TV.

The former PDP governorship aspirant in Ogun State, who proudly noted his 28 uninterrupted years in the party, said a defection is possible if circumstances demand it.

“If I’m going to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for president in 2027, I will, by God and everything in me, leave and join his party,” Sowunmi stated.
“If I’m not there, I’m not there. If I’m here, I’m here. I’ve been in the PDP for 28 years—many can’t even claim 28 days.”

He emphasized that if the decision to leave arises, he would do so openly and without hesitation.

Calls for PDP Reform

Sowunmi, who served as the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, also expressed frustration with the current state of the PDP. He said his persistent calls for party reforms have been ignored by the leadership.

“Why would anyone in their right mind remain in a party where leadership refuses to listen to calls for reform?” he asked.
“I’ve raised my voice repeatedly on the need to fix this party.”

When pressed further on whether he would leave the PDP, Sowunmi admitted that, considering various political factors—including the situation in his home state and the sentiments of his ethnic group—there is a very strong possibility that he might exit the party.

“Looking at the environment, my state, my tribe, and my people’s expectations, there’s a very, very strong likelihood that I will leave,” he concluded.

2027: Gov Sule Sparks Buzz, Reveals Who He Wants As Nasarawa’s Next Governor.

Published

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has openly backed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred governorship candidate under the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sule made this known during a meeting with political appointees at the Government House in Lafia, a move seen as an early signal of political succession plans in the state.

Wadada, who currently represents Nasarawa West in the 10th Senate, recently dumped the Social Democratic Party for the APC, further fuelling speculations about his governorship ambition.

The governor also faulted public officials who parade routine duties like salary payments, road construction and provision of basic amenities as landmark achievements.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 59th inaugural lecture of Nasarawa State University, Sule said governance should go beyond basic responsibilities and focus on policies that directly improve people’s lives.

According to him, leaders must think beyond conventional projects and pursue solutions that bring lasting impact to citizens.

Using his administration as an example, Sule recalled how frequent fire outbreaks at a major market used to force the government into repeated relief payouts to traders.

He said rather than continuing temporary interventions, his government chose to build a modern market to permanently tackle the problem, adding that there has been no report of another fire incident since the reconstruction.

Sule also highlighted the construction of a bridge in Auta near Keffi, which he said has greatly reduced years of devastating flooding in the area.

At the event, Ike Neliaku praised Sule’s development strides, especially road and infrastructure projects across key parts of the state.

Also speaking, Emmanuel Dandaura stressed the need for institutions to align communication with performance, warning that failure to do so could erode public trust.
