Mike Ejeagha, affectionately known as “Gentleman,” died on Friday at the age of 95 following a prolonged illness. In a conversation with Vanguard, Emmanuel explained that the family simply honored the late folklorist’s final wish—to be buried within 24 hours of his death.
According to him, the burial took place quietly on June 7 in their hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa, Enugu State, after a family meeting concluded in agreement with the deceased’s desire. He also disclosed that the Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, was aware of the decision and supported the move in recognition of the music icon’s wish.
Emmanuel added that the family, in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, would constitute a committee to plan and execute full funeral rites scheduled for October 2025.
He also called on the Federal Government to posthumously honor his late father, noting that despite his enormous cultural contributions, he received little formal recognition during his lifetime.
“My father clearly expressed his desire to be buried within 24 hours of his death. We discussed it as a family, and even Governor Mbah agreed that his wish should be respected,” Emmanuel said.
Mike Ejeagha, a revered figure in Nigerian music, left an indelible mark through his storytelling lyrics and preservation of Igbo oral traditions. With a career spanning over six decades, he was celebrated for hits such as Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche, influencing generations of musicians and fans of the highlife genre.
In 2024, his music experienced a resurgence in popularity after a viral dance video by skit maker Brain Jotter featured one of his classic tracks, igniting fresh interest in his legacy among the youth.
