Cyber Heist Foiled! Police Dismantle Gang Hijacking Top Officials’ WhatsApp Accounts

The Nigeria Police Force has dismantled a sophisticated cybercrime syndicate responsible for hijacking numerous WhatsApp accounts—many belonging to high-profile individuals—with the aim of defrauding their contacts.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, the operation was coordinated by the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) following a formal complaint lodged on April 14, 2025. This led to the arrest of a principal suspect in Warri, Delta State.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspect, identified as Onajite Okoro, confessed to collaborating with an accomplice known as “Chief Mallam Zaki”, whom he met on Facebook.

Okoro is accused of aiding the registration of SIM cards, linking them to various bank accounts, and facilitating the fraudulent transfer of funds across multiple Nigerian banks.

Advanced digital forensics and high-level investigative tools were deployed to trace the criminal activities,” the statement noted, adding that millions of naira in stolen funds have been frozen as part of the operation.

Police also recovered fraudulent devices and financial documents connecting Okoro to the scam. Authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the force’s zero-tolerance policy on cybercrime, vowing that everyone involved will face the full weight of the law.

“We are collaborating with financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders to broaden the investigation and ensure justice is thoroughly served,” the IGP stated.

He further emphasized that the police will remain vigilant and responsive to digital threats targeting citizens or institutions.

As investigations proceed, the Nigeria Police is urging the public to adopt safe online habits, including the use of multi-factor authentication, exercising caution with unexpected messages, and avoiding suspicious links or requests for sensitive data.

ACP Adejobi concluded, “The Nigeria Police Force is fully committed to securing the nation’s digital space. Regardless of the status of the perpetrators or their victims, justice will prevail.”

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious online activities as the police strengthen their cybercrime response capabilities in the face of evolving digital threats.

The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 22 in multiple daily sessions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

He gave the charge during a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, where he also praised staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their roles in the successful conduct of the mock exam.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.

He also disclosed that biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems have been deployed to protect the integrity of the exercise.

Candidates whose biometrics cannot be verified, he added, will be rescheduled to write the exam at approved centres.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent monitoring proceedings at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session scheduled for 8:30 a.m. began slightly behind schedule at about 8:40 a.m.
