According to reports, the operation was coordinated by the National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) following a formal complaint lodged on April 14, 2025. This led to the arrest of a principal suspect in Warri, Delta State.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the suspect, identified as Onajite Okoro, confessed to collaborating with an accomplice known as “Chief Mallam Zaki”, whom he met on Facebook.
Okoro is accused of aiding the registration of SIM cards, linking them to various bank accounts, and facilitating the fraudulent transfer of funds across multiple Nigerian banks.
“Advanced digital forensics and high-level investigative tools were deployed to trace the criminal activities,” the statement noted, adding that millions of naira in stolen funds have been frozen as part of the operation.
Police also recovered fraudulent devices and financial documents connecting Okoro to the scam. Authorities are continuing efforts to apprehend other members of the syndicate who remain at large.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, reaffirmed the force’s zero-tolerance policy on cybercrime, vowing that everyone involved will face the full weight of the law.
“We are collaborating with financial institutions and other relevant stakeholders to broaden the investigation and ensure justice is thoroughly served,” the IGP stated.
He further emphasized that the police will remain vigilant and responsive to digital threats targeting citizens or institutions.
As investigations proceed, the Nigeria Police is urging the public to adopt safe online habits, including the use of multi-factor authentication, exercising caution with unexpected messages, and avoiding suspicious links or requests for sensitive data.
ACP Adejobi concluded, “The Nigeria Police Force is fully committed to securing the nation’s digital space. Regardless of the status of the perpetrators or their victims, justice will prevail.”
Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious online activities as the police strengthen their cybercrime response capabilities in the face of evolving digital threats.
