2027 Storm Brews: Wike’s Call for Southern Presidency Tears Through PDP Ranks
Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have voiced differing opinions regarding the recent call by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a group of concerned stakeholders, for the party to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
It was reported that Wike and the stakeholders met in Abuja on Monday, where they advocated for the PDP’s presidential ticket to be allocated to the South in the 2027 elections. They also reaffirmed their support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
Reacting to the gathering of Wike and the G-5 governors, former House of Representatives member Jones Onyereri criticized the recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, claiming it was not properly convened.
According to Onyereri, the NEC meeting violated internal procedures, as Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the party’s National Secretary, did not issue the required notice to members. He stated:
“The NEC meeting wasn’t properly convened. Based on Section 47, subsections 1, 2, 3, and 5 of our constitution, only the National Secretary is empowered to issue official correspondence. Senator Anyanwu didn’t notify members of the meeting and even confirmed in writing that it was cancelled. That’s the key issue—it wasn’t legitimate.”
Onyereri also emphasized that respected party members nationwide have reaffirmed Anyanwu’s position as the duly elected National Secretary, adding that a communiqué was issued in support of this. He reiterated the party’s need to uphold its constitution, particularly the principle of zoning.
Speaking on the zoning matter, Onyereri said:
“We’ve consistently maintained that the 2027 presidential ticket should be zoned to the South. This position was included in Monday’s communiqué.”
Meanwhile, former PDP Deputy National Chairman and Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Bode George, urged restraint, warning that internal party matters should not be aired publicly.
“We have a functioning national executive. Family issues shouldn’t be discussed in the open. A meeting is scheduled for June 30, and I urge everyone to remain calm until then. If we continue like this, we risk exposing our strategies to the opposition. This is not how we run the PDP.”
In a related development, PDP National Organising Secretary Umar Bature said in an interview that the stance of Wike’s ‘Concerned Stakeholders’ group mirrors the official position of the party.
“There’s nothing in the communiqué that contradicts the party’s established views. Some individuals are simply being mischievous. The rules regarding the position of the National Secretary are very clear, and the party risks consequences if it fails to follow them.”
