G5 Governors Prevented Disaster, Stabilised Nigeria — FCT Minister Boasts
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has asserted that the actions taken by the G5 Governors during the 2023 presidential election were pivotal in maintaining national stability and averting potential post-election unrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Wike made this statement on Monday during a meeting with members of the “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP” from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, held in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor explained that the G5 Governors’ decision not to support the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, stemmed from a firm commitment to the principle of rotational zoning between the North and South.
The G5 group comprises Wike himself, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).
“You may like us or not, but the truth remains that if the G5 hadn’t taken our stand, Nigeria would have been plunged into crisis,” Wike declared. “It’s not about who benefited from it, but about doing what was right—and we still stand by that decision.”
Wike Accuses PDP of Abandoning Its Constitution
Wike, a vocal critic of the PDP leadership, accused the party of failing to honour its zoning policy, which he believes contributed to its poor electoral performance.
“We have consistently stressed the importance of respecting both the party’s constitution and the Nigerian Constitution,” he said. “Had the party listened, we would not be facing the current situation.”
He also criticised certain party leaders for their high-handedness, warning that selfish interests and inflated egos were endangering the party’s survival.
“Our responsibility is to reconcile and unify—not to dismiss grievances or alienate members,” Wike cautioned. “We must not let greed and ego destroy our party.”
Despite the internal discord and the fallout from the 2023 general elections, Wike expressed cautious optimism that the PDP could still recover—provided stakeholders commit to resolving the underlying causes of division.
Among those in attendance were former governors Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Okezie Ikpeazu, along with PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former Senate Minority Leader Senator Philip Aduda.
