Published

In anticipation of Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, the Take It Back Movement has released a comprehensive list of protest venues across the country, urging Nigerians to take to the streets in opposition to rising economic hardship, insecurity, and what the group describes as the shrinking of civil liberties under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking to Punch on Monday, the movement’s National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, confirmed that protests will take place in at least 20 locations nationwide, cutting across all regions of the country.

“In Abuja, we’ll assemble at Eagle Square by 8:00 a.m. In Lagos, protests will kick off by 7:00 a.m. at Badagry, Maryland, Agbara, and Toll Gate,” Sanyaolu said.

Other confirmed protest locations include:

  • Cathedral Junction, Akure, Ondo State (8:00 a.m.)

  • Museum Ground, Benin City (9:00 a.m.)

  • Gida Matasa, Niger State (8:00 a.m.)

In Delta State, several venues have been designated:

  • Amukpe Roundabout, Sapele

  • Summit Junction, and Koka Junction, Asaba

  • Otovwodo Junction, Ughelli

  • Effurun Roundabout, PTI Junction, and DSC Roundabout, Warri

  • Police Station Junction, Abraka

Additional locations include:

  • Mokola Roundabout, Ibadan, Oyo State (8:00 a.m.)

  • Kasuwan Gamboru Flyover, Borno (8:00 a.m.)

  • Olaiya Junction, Osogbo, Osun State

  • Juppu Jam Road, Yola, Adamawa

  • Maiduguri Bypass Roundabout, Damaturu, Yobe

  • Bauchi School of ACR, Bauchi (Yelewam Makaranta, 8:00 a.m.)

The movement said the protest is aimed at demanding accountability from the government and reasserting citizens’ constitutional rights.

“We are marking June 12 by exercising our democratic rights,” Sanyaolu said. “The Constitution makes it clear that the government’s primary responsibility is to ensure the security and welfare of the people — an obligation this administration has failed to meet.”

Citing data from Amnesty International, Sanyaolu claimed over 10,000 Nigerians have died due to insecurity since President Tinubu took office.

“In Benue, over 40,000 people are displaced. In Plateau, the number exceeds 68,000. The government appears disconnected from the suffering of its people,” he added.

The group also accused the Tinubu-led government of stifling free speech and targeting dissenting voices.

“Under this administration, the civic space is under siege. Critics are being harassed and silenced. This protest is about resisting that trend and defending our democracy,” Sanyaolu declared.

He warned security agencies against clamping down on peaceful demonstrators, stressing that the right to protest is constitutionally protected and upheld by the Supreme Court.

“The police must fulfill their duty to protect citizens, not intimidate them,” he added.

In his final appeal, Sanyaolu urged Nigerians to rise and “reclaim the soul of the nation” by standing up against poor governance.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
