According to PUNCH Online, Governor Eno officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on Friday during a high-profile event held at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.

The governor was joined in the defection by his deputy, Akon Eyakenyi, alongside members of the state executive council, federal and state legislators, and local government chairpersons.

Reacting to the development in a Facebook post on Friday, Akpabio wrote:

“It is with great joy that I welcomed our governor, Pastor Umo Eno; his deputy, Akon Eyakenyi; APC governors led by the forum chairman, Hope Uzodimma; and other party stakeholders to my residence in Uyo following this historic defection.

Members of the state executive council, lawmakers at both federal and state levels, and council chairmen have also joined the progressive family.

Thank you, Mr Governor, for prioritising the interests of our people. Congratulations and welcome to the fold.”

The defection has already stirred political ripples within the state. Just hours before the announcement, Commissioner for Information and Special Duties, Ini Ememobong, tendered his resignation.

In a statement posted to his Facebook page, Ememobong cited his unwillingness to follow the governor into the APC as the reason for stepping down.

He wrote:

“Today, I have submitted my resignation to the governor in line with his directive that appointees unwilling to join him in his new political journey to the APC should resign.

While I respect his personal decision, I am unable to make the same move. This is guided by my belief in politics driven by principles and my longstanding opposition to that particular political platform—an opposition that, I believe, continues to be validated by many Nigerians.”

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
