Nigerian Correctional Service Breaks Silence on Shocking Report of 26,000 Children Behind Bars!”
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed as false and misleading a recent report claiming that 26,000 children are currently housed in Nigerian custodial centres.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This clarification was provided in a statement released on Wednesday by the Deputy Controller of Corrections and Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Umar Abubakar.
“The attention of the Nigerian Correctional Service has been drawn to a misleading publication by a national daily on June 2, 2025, alleging that 26,000 children are being held in correctional facilities across the country,” the statement read. “We categorically deny this unfounded claim, which grossly misrepresents the facts and risks misleading the public while tarnishing the Service’s integrity.”
The NCoS emphasized that, in line with both national and international legal frameworks, children are not admitted into adult custodial centres.
According to the NCoS, under the provisions of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, and the Child Rights Act, 2003, individuals identified as children (under 18 years) are processed through the juvenile justice system.
The statement explained: “Children in conflict with the law are referred to juvenile detention centres such as Borstal Training Institutions or State-owned remand homes—not adult facilities managed by the Nigerian Correctional Service.”
It further noted that the Service employs strict procedures to verify the age and identity of all incoming inmates. When uncertainty arises, the NCoS collaborates with relevant agencies including the police, judiciary, and social welfare departments to ensure that minors are appropriately classified and protected.
Describing the report as not only inaccurate but also harmful to the Service’s reputation and Nigeria’s human rights record, the NCoS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding human rights, particularly those of vulnerable groups like children.
The public and media have been urged to confirm sensitive information through official sources before making it public.
