Tension Rises: Defence Headquarters Tears Into Amnesty International Over Damning Allegations
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly dismissed a recent report by Amnesty International concerning the rise in killings across Nigeria, particularly over the past two years under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Friday by Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, the DHQ criticized Amnesty for making sweeping generalizations that overlook the significant efforts and achievements of the Nigerian Armed Forces in fighting crime and terrorism.
Amnesty International had claimed that at least 10,217 people were killed and 672 villages destroyed during the period, with Benue State accounting for the highest casualties at 6,896 deaths, followed by Plateau State with 2,630. The report also accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect its citizens from armed groups and bandits.
Responding to these allegations, Kangye rejected the findings, arguing that the report failed to consider the asymmetric threats and the complex socio-political challenges facing Nigeria. He acknowledged the value of civil society in promoting accountability, but faulted Amnesty for its lack of nuance.
“While civil society plays a vital role in advocating for human rights and accountability, we are compelled to object to the report’s broad claims, lack of context, and failure to acknowledge the notable progress made by the Nigerian military under the current administration,” Kangye stated.
He further criticized the report for presenting a grim and generalized view of national security, ignoring the evolving and deeply rooted nature of the conflicts affecting various regions.
The DHQ highlighted several operational successes since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. According to Kangye, the Armed Forces have neutralized over 5,000 insurgents and bandits, reclaimed more than 350 communities from terrorist control, and rescued over 1,200 abducted civilians.
“In areas like Maru in Zamfara, Bokkos in Plateau, and Logo in Benue, our sustained military presence has allowed displaced residents to begin returning under protection,” he said.
Kangye added that collaborative efforts with local intelligence have significantly improved hostage rescue operations, ensuring the safe return of hundreds of women and children abducted in mass attacks.
