Yoruba Council Commends Tinubu for IMF Loan Repayment, Economic Reforms
The Yoruba Council Worldwide has lauded President Bola Tinubu for repaying the $3.4 billion emergency loan secured from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the COVID-19 pandemic, describing the move as a significant step toward restoring Nigeria’s economic stability and international credibility.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, the Council’s President, Mr. Oladotun Hassan, commended the administration’s fiscal discipline, stating that the repayment demonstrates responsible leadership and a commitment to national recovery.
“As President of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, I represent Yoruba communities both within Nigeria and in the diaspora. We appreciate President Tinubu’s bold economic actions, especially in settling such a crucial debt,” Hassan said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He also praised the administration’s anti-corruption efforts, particularly the decision to repurpose recovered looted assets for public use, describing it as a clear departure from past practices.
Hassan highlighted the government’s youth-focused initiatives, including student loan schemes and the creation of a youth academy, as indicators of a progressive and inclusive governance approach.
“Tinubu is strengthening Nigeria’s global image and foreign relations. His achievements have even drawn support from across political lines, with some suggesting a second term based on merit,” he added.
He cautioned socio-political groups like Afenifere against framing leadership succession debates as ethnic issues, arguing that democratic leadership should be evaluated based on performance, not ethnicity.
The Council also pointed to the reduction in staple food prices—such as rice—as evidence of the administration’s economic impact.
“Rice prices have dropped from N120,000 to N50,000 per bag. That’s real relief for Nigerian families,” Hassan said.
He noted that the President inherited a distressed economy but has remained focused on reform without resorting to blame.
Commenting on opposition figures, Hassan encouraged unity over rivalry. He cited the recent cordial encounter between President Tinubu and Peter Obi in Rome as a symbol of potential collaboration among leaders for national progress.
“This is not just about politics; it’s about governance that works for every Nigerian,” Hassan concluded.
The Federal Government recently confirmed that the IMF debt repayment was approved by President Tinubu to restore Nigeria’s fiscal health and ease inherited financial burdens. The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, noted that the repayment enhances the country’s international credit profile.
