Payroll Fraud, Data Gaps Stall Kwara Pensioners’ ₦70,000 Minimum Wage

Published

The Kwara State Government has revealed that widespread payroll fraud and failure to complete residency registration are responsible for the delay in implementing the ₦70,000 minimum wage for state pensioners.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Finance on Sunday, the state had approved an additional ₦10,000 monthly for all pensioners, effective May 1, 2025, as part of the new wage structure. However, only pensioners who have completed their registration with the Kwara State Resident Registration Agency (KWSRRA) will receive payment.

The statement, issued on behalf of the state’s Finance Commissioner, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, and signed by ministry spokesperson Babatunde Abdulrasheed, disclosed that the government uncovered significant payroll fraud within the pension system and has referred the matter to security agencies for investigation.

“Government uncovers and reports payroll fraud to security agencies. Kwarans deserve a clean and verifiable pension payroll,” the statement read.

Dr. Nuru noted that 73.2% of pensioners in the state have failed to register with KWSRRA despite nearly a year of public sensitization.

“We’ve run this campaign for close to a year. The state has provided ample time for all workers and pensioners to enroll. We’re now left with no choice but to pay only those whose identities can be verified,” she stated.

The commissioner also revealed that a syndicate involved in falsifying payroll entries is actively attempting to sabotage the verification process.

“This cartel is using various tactics to obstruct the KWSRRA process and prevent the identification of genuine workers and pensioners. But we are tracking them and taking action,” she said.

In response, the government reiterated its approval of the ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers—first implemented in October 2024—and affirmed the extension of this benefit to pensioners through an across-the-board increase of ₦10,000 to their monthly entitlements.

The decision followed an agreement reached on May 23, 2025, between the government and the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners.

Despite this policy, some pensioners are still awaiting payment for March and April 2025, further underscoring the urgency of addressing the documentation and verification issues.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”
