Telcos to Invest $1 Billion in Network Equipment, Boosting Nigeria’s Broadband

Published

on

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector is set to undergo a significant transformation as operators have committed a substantial $1 billion to network equipment upgrades, with deliveries expected to begin in July, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, revealed on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This investment is the largest of its kind in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry and follows the controversial 50 percent tariff adjustment approved earlier this year. The adjustment, the first in over a decade, was aimed at mitigating the rising operational costs that have surged by over 300 percent in the past ten years.

“The orders placed by telcos, totaling over $1 billion, represent a major milestone for the sector,” Tijani said during an interview with TVC. “We are tracking these orders closely, and the equipment is expected to start arriving between June and July.”

The infrastructure upgrades will be vital in improving broadband penetration, tackling common issues such as dropped calls and slow internet speeds, and advancing 4G and 5G networks. According to the Minister, by the third quarter of 2025, Nigerians can expect improved and more reliable service.

Tijani’s announcement builds on previous comments made by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida, who disclosed that telecom operators had already placed $1 billion orders with Chinese suppliers in April 2025 to support network enhancements.

With an increasing demand for data services, the upgrades are expected to alleviate network congestion and improve broadband access, particularly in high-demand urban areas and underserved rural regions.

“Rural connectivity is crucial not only for digital inclusion but also for strengthening the economy,” Tijani emphasized. “If we don’t invest in these areas, commercial telcos won’t venture there on their own. That’s why President Bola Tinubu has made rural coverage a priority for both inclusion and national security.”

The incoming network equipment will support private sector-led upgrades, but the government also remains committed to intervening in areas where private investment is insufficient, particularly in less commercially viable regions.

“We need to go beyond where private capital stops,” Tijani noted, stressing the importance of expanding connectivity for national security and economic resilience.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly opposed reported moves by the state government to revisit the alleged Offa robbery case involving former Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.
