FG’s Skills-to-Wealth Program Aims to Empower 10 Million Youths in One Year

Speaking at a visit to participants in the North Central zone attending the ongoing Skills-to-Wealth (S2W) training program in Jos, Yilwatda stressed that the initiative was designed to provide young people with practical skills that match Nigeria’s economic needs.
“The goal of this program is to provide unemployed youths with skills that are in line with the demands of our economy,” Yilwatda explained.
The S2W program aims to train 10 million youths within the next year. The pilot phase, which started last week, selected 27 participants from each state across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These individuals are receiving training in key sectors such as agriculture, automobile technology, and renewable energy.
“This initiative addresses critical issues like food insecurity and energy shortages by preparing skilled workers for agriculture and the renewable energy sectors,” Yilwatda stated. “We are also developing expertise in automobile technology to manage the growing automation in the vehicle industry.”
The minister emphasized that the government is working closely with the private sector to ensure that the skills being taught meet market demands, both within Nigeria and internationally.
“As part of this program, we’ve procured starter packs for over 8,000 beneficiaries, with more than 1,000 currently undergoing training,” he added.
To further support this initiative, the government has partnered with institutions like the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), aiming to certify the participants and enhance their marketability. Yilwatda mentioned that beyond technical skills, the program also aims to foster financial inclusion and the development of FinTech across Nigeria.
The minister encouraged participants to form cooperatives and take advantage of government-backed programs such as the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme (GEEP), which provides interest-free loans to small businesses.
Yilwatda also revealed that President Bola Tinubu has allocated a staggering one trillion naira in soft loans for agriculture. In addition, the Bank of Industry is offering further financial opportunities for business growth, providing a substantial foundation for Nigeria’s economic transformation.
“This is an unprecedented program, with no parallel in Africa,” the minister concluded. “We are utilizing IT and data-driven initiatives to ensure national coverage and create opportunities for millions of youths.”
