A Lagos High Court has dismissed preliminary objections filed by social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), in a N1 billion defamation suit brought against him by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, and his son, the artist and activist Folarin Falana, better known as Falz.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice F.A. Azeez, who presided over the matter at the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court, awarded N100,000 each to the elder and younger Falana, making VDM liable for N200,000 in costs. The judge ordered the defendant to file his defence to the main defamation claims without delay.

The legal action stems from a video published on September 24, 2024, by VDM on his Instagram page. The content of the video reportedly referenced controversial public figure Idris Okuneye (alias Bobrisky), and according to the Falanas, contained libelous and damaging statements about them.

Both claimants are demanding N500 million each in damages, along with a perpetual injunction restraining VDM from further defamatory publications. Additionally, they seek a court directive compelling the influencer to publicly apologize on his social media platforms and in a national newspaper.

VDM, through his counsel Marvin Omorogbe, had challenged the court’s territorial jurisdiction. However, this was countered by the Falanas’ legal team, who maintained the Lagos High Court had appropriate authority over the matter. Justice Azeez upheld their argument and ruled that the objections lacked merit.

This development follows an earlier case before Justice Mathias Dawodu, who struck out a related preemptive suit filed by the claimants in April. That matter was deemed academic since the main suit was already active before Justice Azeez.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
