UK Government Targets Visa Overstayers, Considers Measures for Nigeria and Pakistan
The United Kingdom is reportedly considering new visa restrictions aimed at limiting applications from countries whose nationals have a high tendency to overstay their visas and later seek asylum. Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka have been identified as nations most affected by the potential new measures, according to The Times.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The UK Home Office has expressed concerns that nationals from these countries often overstay their visa allowances and later apply for asylum, a process that, if successful, grants them the right to remain in the UK permanently. As a result, the Home Office is considering implementing stricter restrictions for future visa applicants, particularly those applying for work and study visas.
A Home Office spokesperson explained, “Our upcoming Immigration White Paper will provide a comprehensive plan to restore order to the UK’s immigration system. We are working to identify individuals who abuse work and study visas to claim asylum, so we can address this issue more efficiently.”
This move forms part of the UK government’s broader immigration reform, which aims to restore stability and ensure a more secure and efficient immigration system. Details of these proposed changes will be unveiled in the Immigration White Paper later this month.
Nigerians have already faced significant challenges in recent years due to the UK’s tightening visa policies, particularly regarding student visas, work permits, and visa approvals. Tighter rules introduced by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have led to a marked decrease in the number of international students seeking to study in the UK.
In particular, stricter regulations governing dependents and post-study work opportunities have contributed to a 63% decline in the number of Nigerian student visa approvals in 2023. As a result, many Nigerians have looked to the US as an alternative, but they too face increasingly stringent visa conditions under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Additionally, a 2024 report revealed that the visa rejection rate for Nigerians in the UK rose dramatically, from approximately 1 in 31 applications in late 2022 to 1 in 8 by late 2023, putting further financial strain on Nigerian applicants who already face high application fees.
Despite these challenges, the UK continues to generate significant revenue from processing Nigerian visas, with over ₦40 billion earned between June 2023 and June 2024. However, experts from Africa have urged Nigerians and other citizens of developing countries to reconsider seeking opportunities abroad, stressing the importance of contributing to national development instead of pursuing foreign prospects.
