The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, has condemned the recent decision by the National Salaries, Income, and Wages Commission to review the allowances of medical and dental officers in the federal public service, describing it as a move that would further cripple Nigeria’s already fragile healthcare system.
In a statement issued in Benin City, Dr. Oseghale described the June 27, 2025 circular as unacceptable, warning that it reflects a deep disregard for the country’s economic conditions and violates carefully negotiated collective bargaining agreements.
“This circular demonstrates a glaring insensitivity to current economic realities and flagrantly disregards previously established agreements,” he said. “It is especially troubling that such a decision is being made at a time when retaining and motivating Nigeria’s already overstretched healthcare workforce is proving extremely difficult.”
The NMA, Edo State Branch, expressed its “profound disappointment and disillusionment” with the circular and called for urgent intervention by all relevant stakeholders to protect the interests of patients and the integrity of medical practice in Nigeria.
“We categorically reject this circular and call on stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene immediately to safeguard the healthcare system and ensure that patients—who deserve better—do not suffer further setbacks,” the statement added.
Dr. Oseghale affirmed that the Edo State branch of the NMA would stand with the national leadership in defending the profession and the well-being of patients nationwide.
The national body of the NMA had earlier issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure the issuance of a new circular that aligns with earlier agreements. The association warned that failure to comply could lead to disruptions in healthcare services across the country.
