Northern Group Accuses Matawalle of Embezzling N528bn, Minister Denies Allegations

Published

A major dispute has arisen between the Concerned Northern Forum and Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, over accusations of embezzling over N528bn during his time as the Governor of Zamfara State between 2019 and 2023.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The forum, headed by Alhaji Aliyu Sani, held a press conference in Kaduna on Monday, where they accused Matawalle of mishandling funds from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), the Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC), and loans obtained domestically. The group claims that these funds were misappropriated under Matawalle’s leadership.

Responding swiftly to these claims, Suleiman Shuaibu, Matawalle’s former Special Adviser on Bilateral and Multilateral Affairs, dismissed the allegations, calling the forum “faceless” and politically motivated.

The Northern group expressed disappointment that despite submitting petitions to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), including those from May and September 2024, no action had been taken. Sani argued that Matawalle must account for the alleged mismanagement of N290bn from FAAC, N133bn from JAAC, and N105bn from loans during his tenure.

They claim that loans meant for state development projects were diverted by Matawalle via proxies and contractors who received payments for non-existent projects. The forum insists that Matawalle, now holding a federal office, should not be immune from investigation.

In his defense, Shuaibu, who was part of Matawalle’s transition committee, explained that the state had left N11bn in the treasury when it was handed over. He challenged the allegations as unrealistic, particularly the claim of such large sums being misappropriated, given the state’s limited resources.

Shuaibu dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, stating that Matawalle’s continued success and rise in politics have caused discomfort among his rivals. He emphasized that Matawalle’s work has been commendable, and he remains undeterred by such accusations.
