A recent attack by armed assailants in Plateau State has resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals and left several others injured. The assault took place on Monday, May 5, 2025, in the Marit and Gashish communities of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. The executive chairman of Barkin Ladi, Hon. Stephen Pwajok Gyang, confirmed the tragic event in a statement released by his press secretary, Mercy Yop Chuwang. He stated that the victims were given a mass burial on the same day. Hon. Pwajok condemned the attacks, calling for proactive measures to prevent further violence in the area. He also visited the injured at the Barkin Ladi General Hospital, expressing his deep sorrow over the resurgence of violence despite efforts by local authorities to maintain peace.

During his visit, Hon. Pwajok praised the work of vigilantes and security agencies but urged them to increase vigilance to prevent future attacks. He emphasized the need for a collective effort from the government, security personnel, community leaders, and residents to restore peace and security in the area.

This attack follows similar incidents in Bokkos and Bassa earlier this year, where over 100 people, including women and children, were killed. These assaults were also accompanied by reports of shootings and the poisoning of livestock in areas such as Bassa, Riyom, and Mangu LGAs. As of the time of reporting, security forces, including Operation Safe Haven, had yet to release an official statement regarding this latest attack.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.
