Warri Refinery Shutdown: Was Obasanjo’s Doubt a Prophetic Warning?
There was widespread jubilation in December when the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced the restart of the Warri Refinery. Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, visibly proud, led a tour of the site, declaring the partial reactivation a milestone, even though the plant was not yet operating at full capacity. Speaking to journalists, Kyari emphasized the importance of believing in national projects, stating the facility was already producing and supplying products to the market.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
However, just weeks after the public celebration, doubts began to resurface—this time from no less than former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Skeptical of the refinery’s viability, Obasanjo cast doubt on the success of the reactivation, drawing a metaphor about a farmer who claimed to have planted more than he actually did, warning that the truth would emerge at harvest.
Indeed, by January 25, 2025, only three weeks after Kyari’s proclamation, the Warri Refinery was shut down again, reportedly for maintenance. Similarly, the Port Harcourt Refinery, reactivated in November 2024, has been operating below 40% of its installed capacity, despite promises of efficiency.
NNPCL has since clarified that the shutdown was intentional and part of planned intervention work aimed at stabilizing operations and enhancing output. Still, stakeholders remain disillusioned, questioning how a plant declared operational could be shut down so soon, despite a staggering $897.6 million investment in its rehabilitation.
Obasanjo’s skepticism was not unfounded. He referenced past conversations with Shell, which declined to manage the refineries due to concerns about corruption and low productivity. This backdrop, coupled with the refinery’s underperformance, has intensified scrutiny on NNPCL.
NNPCL insists that the overhaul was comprehensive and not the traditional Turn Around Maintenance. It now brands itself as a profit-driven private energy firm, moving beyond its former government-run identity. Yet, as production remains erratic, the gap between investment and output continues to widen.
In light of these developments, analysts and citizens alike are calling for accountability. There is growing consensus that Obasanjo’s caution was less pessimism and more foresight, especially with the refinery’s poor showing just months after a highly publicized restart. Observers warn that unless drastic steps are taken, the refineries’ woes may evolve from national embarrassment to a full-blown scandal.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
